The Black Hole of Sheldon

Please be aware that a hole has opened up in the road at the eastern end our village street, outside The Byre. The hole appears to open into a cavity below the surface of the road, and Derbyshire highways have been informed.

We’ll be placing a traffic cone over the hole until somebody comes to investigate, but please be aware that this part of the road might now be dangerous and liable to further collapse.

Unfortunately, the state of the single road in our village is getting worse and worse over time (see Johnson Lane photograph below), whilst traffic is increasing due to the prevalence of Sat-Nav and poor enforcement of road traffic restrictions.

**Update** The hole was apparently the surface evidence of an old (c1800s) stone lined culvert running the full length of the village. Unfortunately we don’t know what the highways team decided to do underground as the area of the road affected has now been speedily resurfaced.
