Sheldon Jottings for September 2015

It is the 2nd week of August as we write and the middle of hay-making time. We continue to hope for a few spells of fine weather to safely bring it into the barns for the animals to eat over the long winter.

What a fantastic Fell Race and superb Sheldon Day we have just had. The weather for the Fell Race evening was fine and almost 200 runners – a record number – were registered with quiet efficiency and set off on the 4 mile course. The winner was Steve Franklin from Totley in the very creditable time of 24 minutes and 49 seconds. The first lady was Anna Hooghamer. Local runners did well with Amanda Porter from Over Haddon the first local lady home and Mark Elwiss from Wardlow the first local man. The organisation of this incredibly successful event was flawless – well done to Phil and the team – everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

The sun was shining for our Sheldon Day this year and then – there was one brief rogue shower – but the sun appeared again – how lucky was that! The whole event was extremely successful, more people than ever attended – they just kept coming! Almost all the stalls had record ‘sales’ and the total collected was just under £4100 after expenses – undoubtedly a record! The winner of the raffle prize Balloon Ride was Chris Hall.

Visitor comments were ALL complimentary with everyone enjoying the day. Thanks go to all who were involved – the organising team led by Andrew and those who ran events and stalls and provided the cream teas. We would like to highlight all the unsung heroes of the day, those who brought out and set up the stalls before and on the day, those who parked all the cars during the afternoon, those who cleared up afterwards, those who put up and took down the bunting, who took away the stalls, took car loads of unwanted goods to charity shops and did the thousand and one jobs which follow such an event – work that was still going on until the following Wednesday. Thanks to you all. We could not have such a successful day without everyone ‘doing their bit’ to help in some way.

18 tractors set off on the traditional tractor run on the Sunday morning – a grand sight driving through the village. One tractor set off late, in the opposite direction! This vehicle like a minority of those taking part had no cab. Soon after they started it began raining and continued through the day – hopefully no-one caught pneumonia!!!

Our favourite story from the weekend was what happened to Harold when he went to bring the cows in for milking at about 4 o’clock on Sheldon Day. He always takes the Landrover into the field to the back of the cows and leaves the gate open for them to find their own way along the road to the farm. Well meaning visitors seeing the cows ‘escaping’ into the road shooed them back into the field and closed the gate! No-one was more confused than the cows! This happened more than once! Harold’s comments are not recorded! Not until a search party was sent out from Top Farm was the situation rectified and Harold rescued from his dilemma..

Izzy (Isobel S) has completed her school studies and is off to University. As with all school leavers she was presented with a cheque for £50 from the Mary Frost Charity to help with the inevitable expense. Good Luck Izzy.

Many family and friends gathered in the Village Hall on Sunday 2nd August to celebrate Peter (F’s) 50th birthday. This was organised by Sarah and we all thoroughly enjoyed the good food and conversation. Best wishes Peter from us all

In September Georgina starts her MA Town and Regional Planning Postgraduate course at the University of Sheffield. She won a departmental scholarship for the one year course and on completion will be qualified in planning. Good Luck Georgina.

We now have a new Treasurer for Sheldon Parish Meeting. After 15 years in the post Brian has decided to hand over the books and Charlotte (S) has agreed to take over. Welcome Charlotte to your new post and thank you Brian for all your work over those years.

The winner of the 100 Club draw in July was Chris Hall with number 74 and in August was David Woolley with number 92.

Look out for posters advertising tickets for the ‘Harvest Pie and Pea Supper and Quiz Evening’ to be held in the ‘Cock and Pullet’ on Monday 5th October to raise much needed funds for the Church. You don’t have to be the brains of Britain – just come along and join in the fun!
