Sheldon Jottings for June 2018

Spring is well on its way in Sheldon. It really started with a wonderful Easter weekend – the lovely weather brought out all the flowers and by the next week Deep Dale had the most spectacular display of cowslips. The lambs and the cattle livened up all the fields  and our resident blackbird woke us each morning with its beautiful song, surely one of the best in the bird world.

April saw the inaugural meeting of the Book Club, hosted by Julia at Manor Farm and was a great success. Everyone had a most enjoyable evening and the weather allowed most of the meeting to take place outside, until a chill in the air drove everyone inside. The group agreed to read ‘The Secret Life of Bees’ by Sue Monk Kidd ready for the next meeting which will take place at Amanda’s house at 7.30pm on Tuesday 5th June. You are most welcome to come along and join this friendly and jolly group – no pun intended!!

We have two Cream Tea Sundays in May – our first was a pleasant day at Spring Bank Holiday, encouraging people to sit out in the village hall garden to enjoy their scrumptious tea. The blossom on the flowering cherry, which was planted to commemorate the Silver Jubilee in May 1977, was just beginning to come out, and two days later it was beginning its magnificent display – one of the beautiful sights of Sheldon. Walkers passing through the village were taking numerous photographs of it and of the small display put on by the sedum growing on top of the wall just below it. The event made over £200 for the Village Hall Funds – well done everyone!

The playing field came alive on Bank Holiday Saturday as a football match was played between the Cock and Pullet Pool Team and a team from the New Inn at Flash. After a hard fought and thoroughly entertaining match,  which was much enjoyed by all the spectators, (except for the children who were having fun on the swings and the slide!), the New Inn team won by two goals to one. The match raised the princely sum of £330 for the Air Ambulance Fund. Congratulations to all those involved.

The last meeting of the Sheldon History Group this year takes place on Wednesday June 20th in the village hall.  At this meeting there will be an illustrated talk about the Romano – British site at Horsborough at the bottom of Deep Dale. There are so many interesting aspects of Deep Dale,  so no doubt the talk will stray into these as well. Everyone is welcome to come and learn more about the beautiful environment in which we live. There will be no History Group during July or August, so the next meeting of the Group will be in September – look in Sheldon Jottings for details.

As we now have a new Chair – Wendy and Secretary – Joe, running our Parish Meetings please note there is a meeting on Monday 11th June, so do come to support them and your village.

We still need to fill the position of Treasurer!!

We have a new litter bin near Church Lane to replace the old small one. It now matches the posh one at the top of the village. Thanks to DDDC who responded quickly to our request for a new larger bin.

Kath has reminded us that this month a new Church Draw will begin, so if you wish to continue or you would like to have a number on the new ‘100’ ball Draw starting in June, please see Kath or Michelle.

The Church Draw winner for this month was Michelle with number 93. Congratulations!
