Police warn drivers to clear their windscreens in icy weather

Police have warned motorists to make sure they defrost their car windows thoroughly in freezing conditions.

To get the message across they have released photographs of a car that was stopped by an officer last winter.

An officer on patrol at 5am in Ilkeston last December saw a car reverse off a drive, without lights, and travel onto a main road. All the windows of the car were covered in ice and there were only very small areas clear.

The driver was reported for summons for failing to maintain glass and driving without lights. He later pleaded guilty at court and was fined £227; with court costs of £35 and a victim surcharge £15.

Sergeant Kev Langton who dealt with the driver said: “Clearly this was very dangerous. Not only was the driver putting himself at risk he was also a danger to other road users.

“It is really important to clear all vehicle windows completely before you set off on your journey. It may take several minutes but it is worth it to ensure road safety.”
