Weekend Walks

On Friday evening  I went for a walk up to Magpie Mine with a couple of friends who were staying for the weekend. Stephanie, one of my guests took some excellent photogaphs on our walk, some of which are featured below.

We found two young kestrels hunting around the mine and buildings. They were landing on the ground and feeding on something, possibly beetles. There were still good numbers of harebells and mountain pansies present but many of the wildflowers have now gone over.

On Saturday my friends and I went for a walk down to Deepdale from the Sheldon end, starting at Church Lane.  We had an interested audience on part of our route across the fields along the footpath.

There were good numbers of butterflies in Deepdale and on the slopes carpeted in devil’s bit scabious: large whites, green-veined whites, meadow browns, gatekeepers, dark green fritillary common blues, peacocks, a small copper and a small heath were all taking advantage of the good weather.

We took a detour down to White Lodge and across the A6 to have a look on the river Wye, a couple of dippers were showing quite well by the waterfall feeding in the rapids and two grey wagtails flew down stream.
