Adventures of an Amateur Archeologist
18th April 2012 @ 7:30pm

On Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th March we held our annual exhibition in Sheldon Village Hall.  On display were fascinating artefacts which had been found in the village over the last 12 months, along with historic photographs and maps.  We entertained over 60 visitors and were delighted that so many people stayed for tea, cake and a chat with our members!

On Wednesday 18th April we welcome Richard Knisely-Marpole, who will be talking to us about his experiences surveying and photographing some remarkable sites.  Studying archaeology as a very mature student, Richard quickly realised that it was the practical aspects of surveying – both geophysical and topographical – that attracted him.  This has taken him to many parts of the UK, surveying a variety  of interesting remains from Iron Age hillforts to a post-medieval maze and to the Western Desert of Egypt, where he could combine his skills of surveying and of photography to map out previously unrecorded late Roman-era sites, and to image them using kite aerial photography.  Join us at 7.30pm in Sheldon Village Hall, when this illustrated talk will highlight some of the varied work that Richard has carried out.  Entry only £1 and all are welcome!

Sheldon History Group usually meets on the third Wednesday of every month, at 7.30pm in Hartington Memorial Hall, Sheldon.  As well as our programme of speakers and events, we undertake a variety of project work on the history of Sheldon Village.  For enquiries or to book places on tours, please contact Georgina Tanner.
