Sheldon Jottings for July 2013

The longest day has come and gone and summer is officially here although we have had only brief episodes of fine, warm weather. The silage is being cut and baled, repairs and necessary maintenance are being carried out on the Church. Its gates are looking resplendent in their new coat of paint – many thanks to Oliver and Andrew.

The Whit Sunday Cream Teas were another triumph for the hard working team in the village hall. A total of £260 was raised to add to hall funds – terrific.

The History Group visit to some of the archaeology, including a lime kiln, around the village was a great success. On a beautiful, sunny, warm and calm evening with the hay fields looking their stunning best, the quiet peacefulness and beauty of the area in which we live was magical as we contemplated how village folk had lived in the past. An evening visit which will live in our memories for many years. Thank you Ralph.

Margaret has placed 2 designs for the window in memory of John in the Church porch. Do go and look at them and let Margaret know of your preference, after all, hopefully it will be a part of our Church for many years to come.

Izzie is off to Malawi in July on a visit with the World Challenge Project. She will be working in a school and on building projects while she is there. Izzie has to raise a substantial amount of money in order to join this group and has produced the ‘Malawi Baking Book’ to help raise the funds. The book is on sale at £3 and contains almost 50 recipes, many donated by people from the village. Sheldonians have made and enjoyed some of them already and their waistlines can vouch for the excellence of results. If you have not yet done so we recommend that you buy one of these super little books, available from Izzie.

Sheldon Day is fast approaching. The bunting – making evening was a great success with bunting being made out of the colourful materials brought by those who took part. Well done to all of you. A big thank you to William and Alec who did a marvellous job serving vital refreshments. We hear it was a very enjoyable and productive social occasion. The team hope that this will be an annual event and in this way our stock will increase and replace the bunting which has worn out. Any help with putting the bunting up on Tuesday 16th July will be greatly appreciated – the usual start time is 6.30pm.

Sheldon Day is Saturday 20th July from 2.00pm with the Fell Race on Thursday 18th at 7.30pm. If you are uncertain about anything please contact Andrew J or one of the organising team for Sheldon Day or Phil for the Fell Race. The village will be thronged with visitors on both these dates so it is sensible to park our cars ‘off road’ wherever possible. Andrew has reminded us to mention that the team will be carrying out a door to door collection of contributions for Sheldon Day stalls on Tuesday 16th. They will welcome any prizes, bric-a-brac, bottles, books, chocolate and the children’s Lucky Dip. Remember cake and other goodies for the cake stall, please deliver on the day. We have great prizes this year for the raffle which makes a major contribution to the amount collected on Sheldon Day and thus to the activities the Day supports, so we must all keep selling as many as possible. Elizabeth will be only too willing to distribute more books if required. Any help putting the big tent and stalls up on the evening of Friday 19th would also be welcomed.

Georgina will be representing Sheldon at the Derbyshire Dales District Council’s Community Forum on 8th July at the Agricultural Business Centre in Bakewell. Dorcas Bunton, Chief Executive of the District Council will be attending the forum, along with representatives from Derbyshire County Council, Derbyshire Constabulary, Peak District National Park Authority and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service. If you have a question for Dorcas Bunton or any other representative, or if you would like to attend the forum, please let Georgina know as soon as possible. For more information go to their website, call 01629 761302 or send them an email.

If you would like to take part in the ongoing public consultation on the future of the District Council’s street cleansing and grounds maintenance service, please visit their website. The deadline for submitting your views is 24th July.

Despite the demise (perhaps temporarily) of the Ashford and Sheldon Parish Magazine, we hope to continue producing Sheldon Jottings on a single sheet with the dates and times of the Church services. If you know of any items which could be included please let Bronwen or Brian know, after all we cannot write about what we don’t know about!!

Dates for the Diary
